Reel "Ole'School" ReCAP: SNATCH

1st Bare-Knuckle Boxing Scene for the Piker...Brad Pitt!

What up yall!! I just finished diggin' in the crates and rediscovered the UK (originated) blockbuster hit, "Snatched", which was a follow-up film to another UK Non-stop Gansta thrill called “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.” Both films were directed by the same guy-Guy Ritchie and they were released two years apart from each other.  Ritchie soared to the top of my list of directors after watching this Cult Classic for the first time, when it premiered in January 2001.  The star-studded cast consists of Brad Pitt, Benecio Del Toro and Jason Statham before he was introduced to the American movie screen, was phenomenal and kept me entertained from start to finish.

Guy Ritchie shows yet again how he is able to take multiple stories and intertwine them so perfectly, while keeping it more Gansta than the first. This quirky, upbeat story takes place in London and before I saw this magnificent reel, the coming attractions had me thinking the star of the film would be Benecio Del Toro, who was only in the first quarter of the film and played the gambling-degenerate, Franky-4-Fingers but I felt like Jason Statham, who played “Turkish”, was the star/main character, which was more likable and diverse than my homie Benecio. I feel they just did that because Benecio's film career was heating-up at the time the film was made, and Jason Statham was still a "nobody", because none of the Transporter films, which gave Jason his stardom, were released yet. Jason also had some help from Stephen Graham, who played “Tommy”, the Turkish’s not-so tough or smart trustee sidekick that got Turkish into a lot of trouble, but also helped his counter-part get out of trouble, in a "comic relief" sought of fashion. Brad Pitt who played the bare-knuckle boxer, “Mickey” was excellent in every way and I appreciate the director for not marketing him as the star in the film, even though Brad brought star-power into his con'ing clever gypsy fighter character. Mickey was a little difficult to understand because, like the film said, he was speaking Piker (which a term for gypsies and the language they speak which is a combination of a few UK dialects, due to gypsies constantly moving locations/camp sites) which played a big part in the film. Mickey was in in one of my favorite scenes of the film, when his hand skills were tested and as the underdog, but ended up playing the victor...EARLY! This film is about a successful jewelry heist, masterminded by a NY Gansta named Avi, who was played by Dennis Farina, which was spoiled by a Russian member of the original heist crew and he flies to London, and hires a street-tuff by the name of “Bullet-tooth Tony, played by Vinnie Jones, and they go on an epic journey to get the stone back.  Turkish and Tommy get into trouble with a Notorious Gansta, named Bricktopp, played by Alan Ford and they need Mickey to bail them out, but somehow they get deeper and deeper into mischief.  This film was full of double-crossing, bare-knuckle fighting. gun-toting action-pact excitement.

This reel is always a real treat to watch and it stays in my top 5 UK Gansta Reels, for real!! I recommend watching this movie on Netflix or Amazon Prime and it sometimes play on Stars or Epix.  I give this film 5 out of 5 reels.
